FS Class ALn 772

The ALn 772 of the Italian State Railways ( FS) were combustion railcars, which were the most important series of the second generation of railcars in the 1940s and 1950s.

History

In the late 1930s the company Officine Meccaniche (OM ) designed a new model of diesel- powered internal combustion engine car, which was classified as ALn 772. Compared to the older railcars series of the 1930s the ALn 772 were thanks to the new OM- Saurer drive as a larger and more comfortable.

The first copies were 1940-41 by Fiat ( ALn 772.1001-1100 ) and 1940-43 by OM itself ( ALn 772.3201-3296 ) delivered, but put into operation because of World War II until 1945.

1948-49 gave OM a further series of 40 specimens ( ALn 772.3301-3241 ) and again a final 1955-57 ( ALn 772.3342-3423 ).

The ALn 772 were in use throughout Italy and in each train category. Noteworthy were the express trains in Sardinia and Sicily.

The ALn 772 were retired in 1981-1986. Your last bet was the local trains on the route Novara - Varallo.

Panoramic railcar AltN 444

The 1940 -built, badly damaged in World War II ALn 772.3240 was converted into a panoramic railcar in 1948 and was granted the new company number AltN 444.3001 and nicknamed "Belvedere". He was inducted in the season Transport from Milan to Sanremo, but already in 1965 built as ALn 772.

The ALn 772 for licensed tracks

The licensed railway company Ferrovie Padane, operator of the railway Ferrara Codigoro, received in 1941 two specimens that were classified as ALn 72.1004-1005.

The Società Imprese Ferroviarie, operator of the railway line Siena - Monte Antico, got two 1950 ALn 772 with a sidecar; after the nationalization of 1956, this route came to the FS, which were classified according to the motorization of the sidecar as ALn 772.3297-3299.

The ALn 772 for foreign railways

The Yugoslav JDZ got after the Second World War, three copies of the FS, two of which were converted to two-car train.

1949 were built three railcars for Polish PKP that were numbered SD80 and used in high-speed traffic.

Vehicles received

There are four specimens obtained, the only workable this is the ALn 772.3265, which is used for the " Trenonatura " into the countryside around Siena.

The two ALn 72 Ferrovie Padane still exist, but are no longer in operation.
