FS Class E.402

The E.402A is an electric locomotive class the Italian state railways Ferrovie dello Stato (FS ), between 1994 and 1996 a total of 40 vehicles were built from.

History

After the FS had tested their fully electronic chopper electric locomotives of the E.632 series extensively, they decided to build another chopper electric locomotive class. In collaboration with Ansaldo Breda she developed a new electric locomotive class that draw both heavy freight trains and as can also be 200 km / h reached. It emerged five Vorserienloks ( E.402.001 -005) with a style similar to the E.632 style. After its test 45 production locomotives were built with a newly designed, windschnittigerem vehicle body, which carry the numbering E.402.006 to 050.

The E.402A has three level inverter and a chopper on each bogie.

The 45 vehicles are now used in regular service in the FS. Although it was designed for heavy freight trains, they are employed mostly in front of a passenger train, primarily intercity trains.

Development

From E.402A the later further developed E.402B arose.
