Fulton Ferry (Brooklyn)

Fulton Ferry is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It is located on the East River, between Dumbo and Brooklyn Heights directly to the Brooklyn Bridge. The district takes its name after the engineer Robert Fulton. According to him, the famous Fulton Ferry ferry service across the East River, the Brooklyn here has connected before the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge with Manhattan and the Fulton Street, the former Ferry Road is named.

History

In 1814, founded by Fulton Fulton Ferry Company took their work on here and revolutionized the ferry service between the two, then still independent urban Brooklyn and New York. For the first time now existed on the East River is a ferry that was operated with a steam ship. Already since 1642 was there a ferry service available that was with rowing boats and small sailing boats, depending on tides and wind conditions, serviced. The pier in Brooklyn called Fulton Slip, the ferry was until the takeover by the Fulton Ferry Company since 1795 as Old Ferry or as Brookland Ferry known. This ferry was an important trade route for the farmers of Long Iceland. This could bring in this way their agricultural products and livestock in the city of New York. In 1869, when it was begun with the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge, using about 50 million passengers a year, the ferries across the East River.

The designer of the Brooklyn Bridge, John Roebling August had during survey work for a bridge pier in Fulton Ferry an accident, as a result he died a short time later. With the completion of the Brooklyn Bridge in 1883, the ferry service was discontinued.

Tourist importance

By Sea NY Waterway and New York Water Taxi offers even today the opportunity to drive from Manhattan to Fulton Slip. At the pier there is the famous River Cafe and the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, which is housed in the former fire, built in 1926 Boat House. Furthermore, some bronze plaques are mounted on the pier, reminiscent of the Battle of Long Iceland on 27 August 1776 and to the embarkation of the American army under George Washington from Fulton Ferry on August 29, 1776.

A part of the district was declared in 1974 Fulton Ferry Historic District. This includes 15 buildings that were built in the years 1830-1895 in part as a trade - in part as a residence. The historical part of the district is located in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge on the East River at the point where the colonization of Brooklyn, then still Breukelen began. At the former Waterfront, near the pier of the newly formed Brooklyn Bridge Park is located.
