Furongian

The Furongium is in the Earth's upper stratigraphic series of the Cambrian. The series is about geochronological dated in the period from about 497 to about 485 400 000 years. The Furongium is from a still unnamed series ( " Series 3 " ) underlies the Cambrian. On the Furongium follows the Unterordovizium series of the Ordovician.

Naming and history

The series is named after a former name for the southern Chinese province of Hunan ( "Hibiscus country " ) named. The Furongium corresponds to the earlier concept of "upper Cambrian ".

Definition and GSSP

The level lower limit is defined first appearance of the trilobite type agnostoiden Glyptagnostus reticulatus. The border to the next, not yet named stage ( "Stage 7") has not yet been finally determined. Probably the limit is set with the first appearance of the trilobite type Agnostotes orientalis. As GSSP Furongium the series ( and the Paibium stage) a profile ( " Paibi profile" ) was in the Huaqiao Formation in Hunan Province, China, is determined.

Subdivision

Currently, the Furongium is provisionally divided into three stratigraphic levels:

  • System: Cambrian ( 541 to 485.4 mya ) Series: Furongium ( 497 to 485.4 mya ) Level: 10 Level Cambrian ( 489.5 to 485.4 mya )
  • Level: Jiangshanium ( 494 to 489.5 mya )
  • Level: Paibium ( 497-494 mya )

The Furongium roughly equivalent to the former Upper Cambrian.
