Fuzuli District

Fizuli, also Fizuli is a rayon in the south of Azerbaijan on the Iranian border. Official capital of the district is the city Fizuli. About 20 % of the districts bordering on Nagorno-Karabakh are occupied since August, 1993 by the Armenian army as a buffer zone to Azerbaijan, including the city Fizuli.

Geography

The rayon has an area of 1,361 km ². The Aras River forms the border of the Iranian province of Ardabil.

Population

The rayon had 111,900 inhabitants in 2009 according to Azerbaijani information. These were distributed in a city and 73 towns and villages, where the city was abandoned since the invasion of the Armenian troops.

Economy and Transport

The region is dominated by agriculture. There is wine, vegetables and cereals grown and operated livestock. There are several dairies, a reinforced concrete precast plant, quarries and gin and wine production.

Attractions

Rayon is also home to a caravanserai of 1648 and the Hadji - Giyaseddin Mosque of 1682, the mausoleums of Akhmedalilar, Babids and Mirali. In the Azykh caves there are remains of prehistoric settlements.
