G-Lader

The G-Lader is a scroll compressor - ie a component for compressing gases - which was (at first, then later in the Corrado in Passat, Golf and Polo) incorporated into various Volkswagen models to remaining the same displacement, the output of the engine to increase.

The term " G-Lader " stems from the design of the supercharger, resembling the letter "G".

History

On 3 October 1905, the Frenchman Léon Creux had this type of air compressor patent (Patent No. 801 182 ), which is characterized by low noise in and high efficiency. Due to the still very imprecise manufacturing methods, however, he was a long time not be manufactured, as for example the displacer in the loader approaches to tenths of a millimeter of the housing wall without touching it. Only with the prior art of the 1980s, it was possible to produce G- loader.

On July 1, 1989, Georg Jetzer let the European Patent Office a " displacement after the spiral principle " for this system. In 1985, the G-Lader was installed for the first time in the VW Polo G40. The auto supplier Handtmann reached around 2007, this new principle and developed the Handtmannspirallader ( HSL).

Operation

To increase the performance of internal combustion engines, there are various possibilities. One of them is to increase the work performed of the engine at each cycle by the average operating pressure is increased. To more fuel -air mixture is processed by the pressure in the intake pipe is increased - with either a compressor or a supercharger. The G-Lader is considered as a compressor, since it is driven by a belt from the engine; in contrast to the turbo charger, which uses the heat removed by the exhaust gas thermal energy.

In charger housing, the so-called displacement plate ( displacement ) is with spirals on both sides. The loader housing itself also contains either side spirals intermesh with those of the displacer. The displacer moves, driven by the eccentric shaft, which is connected by a small strap with the Verdrängerwelle, on a small circular path without turning themselves. The fast contact points each Verdrängerspirale with the respective fixed scroll wander spiraleinwärts; promote lying between these bodies and chambers compress air bar to a final pressure of no more than 0.65 to 0.72.

Models

The coils of the displacer each have a depth of 40 mm or larger in the version 59.50 mm, that is approximately 60 mm. Therefore, the model designations G40 and G60 VW models in which it was built are:

  • Golf GTI G60 ( Golf II )
  • Golf Rallye G60 ( Golf II - limited to 5000 copies )
  • Golf Limited 16V G60 ( Golf II - special limited edition of Volkswagen Motorsport)
  • Golf III 2.0 16V G60 ( Special Edition Volkswagen Motorsport)
  • Corrado 53i G60
  • Polo 86c GT II G40 (first regularly -selling series limited to 500 pieces, 3 prototypes, various press and pre-production )
  • Polo 86c G40 Cup II (limited to 40 pieces)
  • Polo II 86c eco - Polo
  • Polo 86c II study "Polo Sprint "
  • IIF Polo G40 (Polo 86c )
  • Passat G60 syncro ( Passat 35i )

Problems in practice

The built Volkswagen G-Lader showed during operation, contrary to expectations as a relatively repair prone, though Volkswagen had called them maintenance-free. Depending on speed and mileage worn design reasons various components, which led straight with improper driving to impaired function or even destruction of the G-Lader.

Through regular, moderate revisions with appropriate spare parts, the function of the G- loader can be backed up to several hundred one thousand kilometers to go.

In tuning circles was often the speed of the supercharger increased by amended translations, resulting in a cost increase in performance made possible, but also had an exceeding of the design-related maximum speed result and in particular, often resulted in the total loss in the G60-supercharger. The G40 -supercharger turns out compared to the G60-supercharger in practice due to its compact design makes a durable.

Not the relative need for repairs was later for Volkswagen one of the reasons for not using this technology, but by the higher compared to the turbocharger manufacturing costs due to the higher complexity of the assembly.
