G. Ernest Wright

George Ernest Wright ( * September 5, 1909; † August 29, 1974 ) was an American professor of Old Testament and Biblical Archaeologist. As an expert in archeology of the Middle East, he became particularly well known for his work in the field of study and dating of ceramics.

Life

Wright was born in Ohio, the son of a Presbyterian minister. His Bachelor of Arts he made at the College of Wooster (Ohio ), his theological Bachelor 1934 at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. In the same year he was ordained in the Presbyterian Church.

He studied with William Foxwell Albright at Johns Hopkins University, where he received his Master of Arts in 1936 and 1937, the PhD acquired. From 1939 to 1958 he taught history and theology of the Old Testament at McCormick Theological Seminary. 1958 moved to the Harvard Divinity School, where he was professor and (from 1961) Curator of the Semitic Museum. This he remained until his death.

Wright has published numerous monographs and articles on topics ranging from biblical theology through to the archeology of Palestine. He was also the founder of the magazine The Biblical Archaeologist, which is known as the Near Eastern Archaeology Magazine today. He was a staunch defender of the importance of studying the Old Testament for the Christian faith.
