Gabriel Humberto Calderón ( born February 7, 1960 in Rawson, Chubut ) is a former Argentine football player and current coach.

Playing career

Association

Calderón began his career as a junior player in the Argentine clubs Club El Porvenir, Racing Club Avellaneda Club Atlético Lanús and Club Atlético Independiente before the attacking midfielder in 1983 moved to Real Betis in Spain. He remained there until 1987, and ran on in a total of 131 games, where he scored 38 goals. In 1987 he moved to Paris Saint- Germain, where he scored eleven goals in 102 games. Further stations of his career were the clubs FC Sion (1990 to 1992) and Lausanne Sports (1993 /1994) in Switzerland and SM Caen in France.

National

In the years 1981-1990 Calderón was appointed to play the Albiceleste a total of 23 times. He stood as a striker in the squad for the World Championships in 1982 and 1990. As a national team he managed to score a goal.

Coaching career

1994 ended Calderón his active career and worked as a television commentator before at Caen a coaching career began in 1997 and worked there until 2000. Then he trained his former team in Lausanne until 2003 before he coach the football team of Saudi Arabia was founded in 2004. While there, he managed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany, after a disappointing performance by the team at the West Asian Games 2005, he was dismissed and replaced but by the Brazilian Marcos Paquetá. From April 2007 to 2008 Calderón coached the national team of Oman. In June 2008, he took over as coach for the Saudi Arabian club Al -Ittihad, a position he held until 2010. Following this he succeeds Eric Gerets as manager of Al -Hilal in Saudi Arabia, before he took over the national team of Bahrain after a spell at Baniyas SC. As of August 13, 2013 Calderon was out of contract. In January 2014 it undertook Betis Sevilla as a coach.
