Gabriel Trejo Paniagua

Gabriel Trejo Paniagua (* 1562 in Plasencia, † February 12, 1630 ) was a Spanish cardinal. He came from the gentry and studied law at Salamanca. After completing his doctorate, he taught at this university. He then went through a lengthy career in the Spanish administration. He was Attorney-General, then Supreme Court Castilian in Valladolid. In 1609 he stepped down as Attorney-General in the High Council, a central council committee of the Spanish crown. 1610 was followed by membership in Inquisitionsrat.

Gabriel Trejo Paniagua was one of the favorites of the Duque de Lerma, an influential minister of Philip III. , Who furthered his career significantly. After one of the Curia unwelcome Spanish ambassador was recalled by the Minister, Pope Paul V was willing likewise to this a favor and gave Gabriel Trejo Paniagua 1615 the cardinal's hat. 1617 moved Gabriel Trejo Paniagua to Rome, where, however, he soon found himself to another favorite of the Duque de Lerma in competition.
