Gaetano Braga

Gaetano Braga ( born June 9, 1829 in Giulianova (Teramo ), † November 21, 1907 in Milan ) was an Italian composer and cellist.

Life

He studied at the Conservatory in Naples, among others, at Salvatore Mercadante. After pursuing a career both as a composer and as a cellist and was regarded as one of the leading cellists of his time in the second half of the 19th century.

His eight operas were very popular because of their melodies wealth and drama. Of his other compositions, the piece " La Serenata ", also "The Angel Song " was called, internationally known. There is a dialog (similar to Goethe's Erlkönig ) listens between a worried mother and a fever-stricken daughter, the angels voices and eventually follows them ( " O buona notte mom, io seguo suon il, il io seguo suon " ). The piece was, inter alia, " The Black Monk " mentioned in Anton Chekhov's short story.
