Gaius Claudius Centho

Gaius Claudius Centho was an important politician of the Roman Republic and 240 BC and consul in 225 BC, censor.

Life

Gaius Claudius Centho came from the Roman patrician family of the Claudian and according to ancient sources was the son of the famous censor of 312 BC, Appius Claudius Caecus. The ancient historian Friedrich Munzer doubts this figure because of the long interval which lies between the Centho and of the offices held by his alleged father offices.

Centho held 240 BC, together with Marcus Sempronius Tuditanus the consulate and was in 225 BC, censor, where he had Marcus Junius Pera to colleagues. The Roman historian Livy mentions two offices that Centho exercised during Rome's war against Hannibal. Accordingly, he acted 217 BC as Interrex and was 213 BC elected dictator to hold the next election. After this time Centho no longer appears in the sources.
