Galán is a city in the Provincia Comunera the Santander Department in Colombia. It was founded on August 27, 1783 and has an area of ​​205.7 km ². The number of inhabitants is 2992 (as of 2005).

Geography

Galán borders the following municipalities: to the north Zapatoca, in the west San Vicente de Chucuri and El Carmen de Chucuri, in the south Palmar and Páramo, and to the east Cabrera and barichara.

History

The town was founded on 27 August 1783 the name of San José de la robada, but destroyed in 1869 by an earthquake. The twelve years of reconstruction work was supported by the surrounding communities. 1881 the City Council decided to change the name in honor of the caudillos Galán José Antonio Galán. This had led the comuneros revolt of 1781 and was executed a year later after his capture in Bogotá by the Spanish colonizers.

Economy
