The Galena River (also known as Rivière aux Charms, Fevre or Fever River ) is a 84.3 km long left tributary of the Mississippi River in the Midwest of the United States.

Geography

The river rises north of Benton in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, flows through the Lafayette County, to then continue south to reach the Jo Daviess County in Illinois. He runs through the city of the same name Galena and flows approximately 2 km to the southwest in the upper reaches of the Mississippi.

The river flows through the Driftless Area called glacially shaped plateau that extends across the southeastern Minnesota, southwestern Wisconsin, northeastern Iowa and extreme northwestern Illinois. In the last ice age, the Wisconsin Glaciation, the so-called region remained ice-free, so that the valley of the Galena River also could cut deeper into the plateau during this time.

History

The river was first known as " Rivière aux Charms " and " Bean River " because of the frequent its shores wild beans. Due to the corruption of the French name, the name " River Fever " for the flux originated.

The war of 1827 against the Winnebago was also known as " Fevre River War" and named after the river.
