Galenia

Galenia pubescens

Galenia is a plant genus of the family of Mesembryanthemum plants ( Aizoaceae ). The botanical name of the genus honors the Greek physician, philosopher and natural scientist Galen.

Description

The species of the genus Galenia grow as shrubs or perennial plants. Your internodes are papillat or bald, and their branches often einseitswendig. The opposite or change-constant leaves are lanceolate to acicular. Your epidermis is covered with more or less low papillae that shine at first and later become white.

The sessile flowers are borne in cymes more or less rich, which can often be well distinguished from the sometimes large vegetative part of the bush. Your four to fünfzipflige (rarely dreizipflige ) Perigon is small. There are eight to ten stamens present, the stamens are extended to three times when open the dust bag. The dry, leathery, aufreißenden or not aufreißenden capsule fruits are three to fünffächrig. Occasionally some source tissue is present. Each compartment contains a hanging, kidney-shaped to rounded and flattened most of the seeds.

Systematics and distribution

The genus is widespread in southern Galenia Angola to Namibia and the South African provinces of Eastern Cape, Free State, Northern Cape and Western Cape. The plants grow mainly in dry areas in the lowlands, often in ecologically disturbed areas adjacent to roads in gravel soils.

The first description was in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus in his work Species Plantarum. The genus Galenia is divided into two subgenera and include the following types:
