Galvano Della Volpe

Galvano Della Volpe (* September 1895 in Imola, † 1968 in Rome ) was an Italian historian of philosophy, philosopher and Marxist. Della Volpe graduated from with Rodolfo Mondolfo at the University of Bologna in 1920. He taught from 1925 in Ravenna and Bologna at the high school history and philosophy (until 1938 ). From 1929 he taught history of philosophy at the University of Bologna. Della Volpe was appointed in 1938 as Professor of History of Philosophy at the University of Messina. He retired in 1965. Since the 1920s, he was under the influence of neo-Hegelianism of Giovanni Gentile. Della Volpe later became a sharp critic of the two most important Italian philosophers of his time, the fascist Gentile and the Hegelian idealist and anti-fascist Benedetto Croce. Towards the end of the Second World War was followed by his turn to Marxism (1944). After the liberation of Sicily by the Americans, he joined the PCI.

Della Volpe's Marxism was strictly antiidealistisch and antihegelianisch. He advocated a separation of political engagement and philosophical discussion. As one of the first Marxists he dealt with Ferdinand de Saussure and the Copenhagen glossematics.

Work

Della Volpe's main interest was the development of Marx's thinking and the relationship between Marx and Hegel.

As Louis Althusser went della Volpe of a radical "break" in Marx's thought development from which he, dated to the year 1843, the emergence of Marx's critique of Hegel's state law. As his most famous work ( Logica come true logic as a positive science scienza positiva, 1950 ) in which the clarification of the relationship between Marx and Hegel is the focus. Della Volpe represents here the view that Marx's method differs substantially from that of Hegel and there is no genetic relationship between the two. Whereas Hegel's method was mystifying and go to the concrete from the abstract, the method of Marx legally "as the circular movement from concrete to abstract and from that again to the concrete ."

Della Volpe has also designed its own version of a Marxist aesthetics ( Critica del gusto, 1960). He turned primarily against the prevailing views of Croce's contrast the aesthetic as the intuitive to science as the rational. The art is rather " ( concrete ) reason [ ..], as are the history or science." They can be distinguished from those " not in their cognitive, gnosiological, general elements ".

Reception and impact

Della Volpe played a decisive role in ensuring that in the post-war Italy newly awakened interest in an intensive examination of Marx's theory and Marx's original texts. In the 1950s and 1960s, more and more crystallized out of the school building influence della Volpe. The result was the " Della Volpe - school" that systematically grappled with the Marxian theory. Her most famous representatives were Lucio Colletti and Umberto Cerroni. More students della Volpe are Ignazio Ambrogio, Alessandro Mazzone, Nicolao flag, Rocco Musolino, Giulio Pietranera, Mario Rossi and Giuseppe Vacca.
