Ganghwa ( 강화도 ,江华 岛) is an island in the Yellow Sea off the west coast of South Korea. The island is located in the estuary of the Han River, and is lead by the 400 to 1200 meter wide channel Yŏmha, over the two bridges, separated from the mainland. The highest mountain of Gangwha is the Mani -san, which is 469 m above sea level. The island is the fifth largest island in South Korea.

Today, about 65,500 people live on it. It belongs administratively to the city of Incheon forms the major part of the Municipality of Ganghwa -gun ( 강화군 ,江华 郡). About half the population lives in Gangwha, a town on the northeastern end of the island.

On the island are the Dolmenstätten taken as a World Heritage Site in UNESCO's list of World Heritage (Asia and Oceania) in 2000.

During the time of Korea's late Joseon Dynasty, the island was the scene of several futile Invansionen foreign powers. The highlight of the attacks represented the Ganghwa incident of 1875, in which Japanese troops unsuccessfully tried to conquer the island. As a result of battle, the Japanese Navy blocked the waters around the island strategically important. This eventually led to a forced opening of the hitherto internationally isolated in Korea.
