Garcia de Noronha

Dom Garcia de Noronha (* 1480 in Lisbon, Portugal, † April 3, 1540 in Goa, India) was a Portuguese nobleman. He was the third viceroy of the Estado da India.

Life and work

As far as life is reconstructed, Garcia de Noronha comes from noble proportions; his father Dom Fernando de Noronha, also was in the privy council, royal steward.

As a young nobleman frequented regularly at the royal court. He was also active I. After the death of his father as a member of the Privy Council at the court of King Manuel. Already in 1511 he was commander of a squadron of six ships to India.

He was married to Ines de Castro, with her he had four children. Moreover, he was a nephew of Afonso de Albuquerque. In Lisbon, a street is named after him.

Viceroy of India

As a successor to the critically ill Governor General Nuno da Cunha, he was on March 18, 1538 by royal decree for Viceroy of Portuguese India ( Estado da India ) by King John III. appointed by Portugal. On April 6, 1538, he landed in India.

During his reign he promoted the settlement of missionaries on the island of Celebes and Macassar. He issued a ban on the construction and the construction of mainly Hindu and Buddhist temples within the Estado da India. With the King of Cambay, he joined in Diu officially peace.

He died as Viceroy on April 3, 1540 in Goa.
