Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay is a 101 acre park that was created in the central district of Singapore on reclaimed land.

History

Gardens by the Bay is part of a strategy of the government of the city state of Singapore, with which the garden city to be converted into a city in the garden, so that the quality of life of residents can be improved by green belts. This policy of the government, was announced by the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong at the National Day in 2005. The parkland along the sea and the Marina reservoir is to be an attractive recreational area for the city's population. An international tender was made ​​in 2006 for the master plans for the two planning areas Bay South Bay Garden and East Garden, which won the two firms Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter.

Construction areas

The following areas at the Marina Bay Reservoir be developed:

  • The construction area of ​​Bay East Garden comprises 32 acres. A 2 km long promenade leads to the Marina reservoir around. The park was prepared in 2010 for the Youth Olympic Games and partially opened to the public in October 2011.
  • The 54- acre subarea Bay South Garden was completed in June 2012. In the Bay South Garden are two inserted lived with glass habitats, in which different faunas are shown from different climates. In the largest Glass House, the Flower Dome, mild, dry climate conditions are created. It will be shown plants that are typical of the Mediterranean or semi-arid climates. These include, for example, the Chilean Araucaria, olive trees, the Canary Island date palm, baobab trees, the Chilean Wine Palm or Wollemia and more. In the glass house called rain clouds forest the climate of the tropics at altitudes of approximately 1,000 to 3,000 meters above sea level is adjusted. The eponymous cloud mountain is covered with typical representatives of its flora, such as orchids, bromeliads or Flamingo Flower ( Anthuirien ).

Another device, the Super Trees, plant -covered steel frames with heights between 25 and 50 meters. They serve the breeding of rare plants. It is also obtained by means of photovoltaic electricity for lighting and cooling systems, the rainfall to water the plants are collected and some of the trees serve as cooling towers for cooling systems in greenhouses. Two of the towers are connected up in the air with a Skyway, which the Singaporean Oversea Chinese Banking Corporation ( OCBC ) has funded. Further developments

The construction zone Bay South is to be developed by the year 2020. Likewise, a new subway line of the MRT ( Singapore) will be completed for the as yet undeveloped only by bus area until 2021.
