Gardez

Province

Gardez is the capital of Paktia province in eastern Afghanistan and 2008 had about 70,000 inhabitants. The place is of military strategic importance as it is accessible via the Peiwar Pass from Pakistan and Kabul Khost Khost - Gardez on the Pass. Kabul is 60 km away and on the road to Kabul is a turn-off to Ghazni.

Furthermore, Gardez located near the city of the region of Tora Bora in the Battle of Tora Bora took place. Gardez is located at about 2,300 m above sea level and through the town flows the river Rūd -e Gardez ( Gardez River ).

The city is populated by Tajiks and Pashtuns.

The Federal Republic of Germany began in 1965, in Gardez, a development project in the amount of DM 2.5 million, which was completed with the acquisition of power by the Communist government in 1979. In this project, the road was paved to Kabul, three schools for boys and one for girls built, a hospital, a training school for teachers, two hotels and a mosque. Most of the buildings were destroyed in the civil war in the 1980s.

After the fall of the Taliban, a provincial government in March 2003 was installed, which was introduced by the U.S. Army. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID ) conducted a electrical supplies, medical supplies, school facilities and water supply in the city and region.

The airfield is north of the city of Gardez.
