The Khost - Gardez Pass, in the region Seti Kandow pass or abbreviated to KG Pass, is the main link of Khost and Gardez, the capital of the Afghan province of Paktia. The pass is partially a dirt road and partially paved.

History

The Khost - Gardez Pass has been used since ancient times, when he allowed the connection from Kabul to India. During the Soviet occupation of Mujahideen attacked frequently Soviet convoys on this pass route. The pass road was paved in part with funds from a German development project from 1965 and repaired. These works were abandoned in 1979 with the Soviet occupation.

Geography

The road to Khost - Gardez Pass starts at about 2,300 m altitude in the valley of the Gardezflusses and rises to a peak height of about 4000 m on. The pass performs numerous administrative and tribal areas, as the Swak, Gerda Serai and Waze Zadran in Paktia and Khost in Besmil. The root of the Zadran is the dominant Pashtun tribe living in the area of the pass.

The pass is located in an arid climate where only bushes and small trees grow. In winter, the pass due to high snow is not passable.

From Pakistan from the Peiwar Pass leads to Gardez and Khost - Gardez over the pass on to Khost. From there, the road continues to Kabul. This route is the shortest route from Kabul to Pakistan.

Security

Security in the pass region is problematic and it is expected to attack militants. There coalition soldiers, Afghan armed forces and civilians were attacked and murdered. The Afghan National Security Forces and the coalition have an outpost Salerno to the safety of the travelers set up close to the pass.
