Gary Megson

Gary John Megson ( born 2 May 1959 in Manchester, United Kingdom ) is an English former football player and current coach. He is the son of former football player and trainer Don Megson.

Club career

The defensive midfielder has been active for a total of nine English clubs. His professional career began as a 18 -year-old at Plymouth Argyle in the third division, where he was discovered by Official Everton. In almost two years, however, he could not in Liverpool in the First Division prevail and moved in 1981 to the second division at Sheffield Wednesday, the club for which had already been active for his father from 1959 to 1969.

In Sheffield he quickly became a regular player and was one of the guarantors of the rise of the Owls in 1984. During the three years at Sheffield Wednesday he was not only in three games on the court. In 1984 he received a contract with Nottingham Forest, but was not used by coach Brian Clough in the first team and was a few months without a top-flight Newcastle United transferred to the Second Division. Here he first played regularly, but could no longer refer to the rise of the Magpies establish himself in the first team and went in December 1985 back to his former club in Hillsborough. Here he conquered back a regular place and completed until 1989, again more than 100 league appearances for Sheffield.

In January 1989, he moved to his hometown to Manchester City, with which he ascended to the First Division in the summer and where he remained for three and a half seasons. Next stop was Norwich City, where in the first Premier League season 1992/93 he had his share of it, the first time that Norwich held third in the UEFA Cup feeder. In his last season with the Canaries player he was as a player and assistant coach John Deehan and took over its short positions, when he resigned in the spring of 1995. But Megson could not save from relegation Norwich.

He left Norwich and was for two missions as a player at the unterklassigen Lincoln City and Shrewsbury Town, before he again coach in Norwich was as successor to Martin O'Neill in November 1995.

Coaching career

Megson coached Norwich until the end of the 1995/96 season, but was then fired and replaced by Mike Walker. In 1996 he took over the coaching job at third division FC Blackpool, where he remained until the end of the season, before he went back to Sheffield due to illness in the family. Then he was two seasons Coach of Stockport County in the second division, before moving to Stoke City. Here he was made redundant after a short time, as an Icelandic consortium bought the club and the former national coach of Iceland, Gudjon Thordarsson, began as a coach.

At the end of the 1999/2000 season Megson took over the coaching job at second division side West Bromwich Albion. With a win last season game, the team saved from relegation. In the following season he led the team to the playoffs, and the end of the season 2001 /02 West Bromwich rose to the Premier League. It succeeded Megson and his team, the old rivals from the neighboring town, Wolverhampton Wanderers, at the end of the season to overtake even though the Wolves had already had eleven points clear. This brought the title Megson Division One Coach of the Year a. After one year from the team did rise again, but he could move again the following season in the top flight football. After a weak start to the 2004/ 05 season he was released on 26 October 2004.

In January 2005, Megson 's successor Joe Kinnear at relegation-threatened second division Nottingham Forest, but could not prevent the initial slippage of the traditional club in the third division. He should return the team to the championship, but by January 2006 Forest of the relegation zone was closer than the rise of places. Under pressure from the fans, he resigned in February 2006.

On September 13, 2007, the board of second division Leicester City announced the signing of Gary Megson known as fifth this year alone man on the coaching job of the club. However, he managed the team in only nine games before he accepted an offer from the Premier League club Bolton Wanderers. On 24 October 2007 he signed a two and a half year contract at Bolton. On 30 December 2009, the club announced that he has Megson released from his duties.

After over a year without a trainer Gary Megson took over 4 February 2011 the coaching job with the English third division side Sheffield Wednesday. The direct promotion back to the second division, the team succeeded under him not, at season's end Wednesday occupied only the fifteenth place in the table.

On 29 February 2012, Gary Megson was, though he took third place in the table with his team, and had just won the prestigious derby against second-placed Sheffield United, dismissed. Chairman Milan Mandaric justified the move so that he saw the great goal, the rise, threatened by last fluctuating performances.
