The Gaula is a river in Sør -Trøndelag, Norway.
Geography
Once it starts at 1,288 meters high Kjølifjellet far from the Swedish border to collect his water, the Gaula River is oriented in a northwesterly direction. In Holtålen the young river tumbles down a waterfall. After 145 kilometers, the Gaula rich slope leads into a side arm of the Trondheim fjord, just a few kilometers southeast of the city of Trondheim.
Holtålen, Midtre Gauldal, Melhus and Trondheim municipalities, have the area shares in the river.
The Gaula has a catchment area of at least 3661 km ², of their numerous tributaries may be mentioned Rugla which has a remarkable valley, Hesja, Holda, Forda, Bua and Sokna.
Its catchment area is bounded on the southwest by the Orkla, in the north of Nea - Nidelva River system.
Others
The river was heavily loaded earlier as a result of mining with heavy metals, after great efforts in the 1980s and 90s, the concentrations could at least be greatly reduced.
Since 1985, the Gaula enjoys protection as part of a water conservation plan adopted by the Storting ( Verne Plan III for vassdrag ).
The river is the closely Orkla popular for salmon fishing.
