The Orkla is a 179 km long river in Sør -Trøndelag in Norway. It forms the outlet of a lake, the Orkelsjø in Oppdal, flows through the municipalities (not necessarily through the villages, so is the place Tynset on Glomma ) Tynset, Rennebu, Meldal and Orkdal before it opens at Orkanger in the Orkdalsfjord, a page fjord of Trondheim Fjord.

The estuary was until the 1970s a natural delta with extensive wetlands and a rich bird life. The largest part of the delta is now filled with gravel and planted with industrial plants. West of the river mouth has the test of time to this day, a small residue of the wetland.

The river is regulated by five power plants that were built in the years 1978-1985.

The Orkla is a river for salmon fishing. Salmon occur on the lower 88 km stretch of river.
