Gavril Sarychev

Gavriil Andreevich Sarytschew (Russian Гавриил Андреевич Сарычев, scientific transliteration Gavriil Andreevič Saryčev; * 1763, † June 30, 1831 ) was an officer of the Russian navy and hydrograph.

Together with the related Russian service British Joseph Billings, he headed from 1785 to 1794 an expedition for the exploration and development of coasts and seas of north-eastern Siberia. He sailed in 1791 the coast of Kamchatka and Unalaska ( Aleut ). In 1808 Sarytschew was promoted to Vice Admiral in 1809 and appointed a member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Shortly before his death he was still promoted to admiral in 1830.
