Geestemünde confluence with the Weser
The Geestemünde is a river in Lower Saxony and the state of Bremen, the last tributary of the Weser flows in Bremerhaven in this.
Geography
The Geestemünde rises in Hipstedt ( Samtgemeinde Geestequelle ) in the district of Rotenburg ( Wümme) ten kilometers west of Bremervörde and drained a large part of the former county Wesermünde (now district of Cuxhaven ). The Geestemünde river forms the border of the emerging city Geestland.
The Geestemünde flows in the upper reaches by Geestland and thus gravelly subsoil, or by marshland. The tidal influence was stopped in the middle reaches through the construction of locks and severely restricted the marching formation. For several years ( biotope network with Polder Glies and Sellstedter lake ) were re- created permanent inundation areas by the dismantling of dikes as in the polder Bramel that have a habitat for many rare species, including the white-tailed eagle created.
The navigable length of Geestemünde is given as 25 kilometers and is the end of the Elbe- Weser navigation path. In the lower river meanders the Geestebrücke strong; in the city of Bremerhaven are of the original five meanders three available.
Shortly before the opening of the Geestemünde the storm surge barrier is under the Kennedy Bridge, which was completed in 1961; just in time for the 1962 storm surge, in which a part of Bremerhaven otherwise would have been flooded on the lower Geestemünde dikes. In a forecast of the flood damage in case of failure of the Geestemünde Barrage in Bremerhaven the EGA food, it is assumed that 10,860 affected residents with an expected loss amount of approximately 247 million euros.
Until the merger to the district Wesermünde 1932 was the Geestebrücke border river between the circles Lehe and Geestemünde.
Nature at the Geestemünde
