The Geierstein or Geiger stone is a 1,491 m high mountain in the western Mangfallgebirge, a part of the Bavarian Alps, and is close to Lenggries in Isarwinkel.

Nature

The Geierstein is part of a west-east direction extending to the north and south steep ridge. From Lenggries ago, the Geierstein the first prominent peak. To the east, then the comb through the summer Bachgraben is interrupted ( or impact head offset towards the south ); the ridge trail requires a descent to 1261 m. Further to the east follows the highest summit of the ridge, the Fockenstein (1564 m); then the comb holds a height of about 1100 m ( popular panorama ) until shortly before Bad Wiessee with the breakthrough of the Tegernsee. From Lenggries westwards set Brauneck and Benediktenwand continues the Fockenstein - Geierstein comb.

The vulture stone is almost completely forested; only in the immediate vicinity peak occurs bare limestone emerge from the forest floor.

The summit offers a splendid view of the entire Isarwinkel, in the Munich gravel plain (with hairdryer view to Munich ). Tegernsee in the mountains, weather stone and Karwendel

Name

What name of the mountain the " right" one, is controversial. The Alpine Club Map writes " Geierstein " and including small and in brackets " Geiger stone ".

A legend tells of a violin -playing hermit, an eagle auskratzte an eye - thus demonstrating that both forms of the name have been around for a long time side by side.

Ways

Due to its location the crest Geierstein is accessible only from the west and east on trails. The excess is part of the Maximilian pathway and thus of the European long-distance hiking trail E4.

The ascent from the west starts at the castle pond which is located in the forest just above Lenggries in a trough between vineyard and neck passing. The access is from the north there in 10 minutes from the train station Lenggries, from the west via the Calvary, or from the south from the car park behind the castle Hohensalzburg castle in Lenggrieser hamlet of Anger. The road, little more than a footstep, runs consistently in steep forest on the south side of the ridge. The mark is currently (as of 2012) patchy and faded. In the ascent independent orientation is required; the descent of the path is easier to detect. Thanks to the forest, the trail even on hot days is good to walk on. At 1,280 m to reach the Markeck, a small promontory overlooking Bank. Especially in the second half is safe footwear and sure-footedness in demand because the increase on a narrow path and the path is always rocky rooty. Since the increase is considered to be quite strenuous and demanding, the Geierstein has remained a quiet mountain; he is many times rarer than the adjacent committed Fockenstein. On signs in place, the rise time is specified with two hours.

Access from the west is a little more difficult because the work requires a little climbing and via two narrow ridges with left and right steeply sloping hillsides. The Gipfelweg begins on a saddle (1320 m ) on which ( 1.5 hours from Geierstein ) meet a rise from Lenggries (Route 610) and the ridge trail towards Fockenstein. Thus, a variety of routes and crossings are possible; those arriving by public transport, may exceed the entire Geierstein - Fockenstein comb and from Bad Wiessee travel back ( bus to the train stations in Tegernsee and Gmund, in summer also ship to Tegernsee ).
