The Geißstein (also Gaisstein or Gaißstein ) is a mountain in the Kitzbühel Alps and the Pinzgauer mountain with an altitude of 2363 m above sea level. A. on the border between the provinces of Tyrol and Salzburg.

The Geißstein is located about seven kilometers southeast of Jochberg. Valley communities in the province of Salzburg are Saalbach -Hinterglemm ( in the northeast ), and Stuhlfelden and Mittersill ( in the south). To the east of Geißstein is the Vogelalmgraben, a right tributary of the GlemmValley. To the southeast lies the Stuhlfeldener Mill Valley, a left tributary of the Upper Pinzgau. Here is the Bürglhütte (1699 m) also one of the main starting points for climbing the mountain. From the hut there is a marked hiking trail along the southern ridge to the summit. Alternatively, the Geißstein from the southwest to 2035 m high Sintersbach Charter on the relatively flat grassy southwest side of the mountain. The significantly steeper southeast flank leads another marked trail that is accessible from Vogelalmgraben or from the northern 2048 m high transition Schlaberstatt from.

About the Southwest route from the Bürglhütte the Geißstein in winter is also accessible as a ski tour.

According to legend, said to have been dismantled at Geißstein earlier gold, even Venice are said to have worked here. On the Schlaberstatt then to festivals have been celebrated, in which devils were to be found among the musicians.

Rise

From Stuhlfelden (Standard Rise )

Start: center ( 800 m above A.. ). Well-marked hiking trail through the Mill Valley for Bürglhütte (1700 m above sea level. A. ) at the foot of the mountain, from there climb up the south ridge to the summit. The Bürglhütte is accessible in summer via a service road and by car. Difference in altitude 1563 m (from Bürglhütte 663 m).

From Mittersill

Start: (. 950 m above A. ) Burkbachbrücke in the district of Thal creek north of the castle Mittersill ( accessible by car ). On Arnoweg ( Section 2/ 16) along the Burkbaches on the Liendlalm and Ross pathway Charter ( 2060 m above sea level. A. ) to Sintersbach Charter ( 2035 m above sea level. A. ) and continue on a gently rising path to the summit ( altitude difference 1413 m).
