Gençay

Gençay is a commune with 1754 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Vienne in western France.

Geography

Gençay located about 20 km south of Poitiers on the banks of the scenic Clouère and belongs to the region of Poitou.

History

Individual traces show the population of the district in Gallo-Roman times.

In the 10th century it was the capital of the Viguerie and Archipresbyterat of the Ward. The old fort was two years besieged by the Duke of Berry. Only in 1375 it was taken by Bertrand du Guesclin. In the 15th century Gençay was under the rule of La Trémoille.

Culture and sights

  • The town has some very old and picturesque houses. The house La Briauderie and Hôtel des Trois Marchands are as Inscrit Monument Historique historic monument.
  • The ruins of the fortification from the 13th century with its almost triangular buildings, round corner towers and fortified gates are classified as a monument historique.
  • The Château de La Roche from the 15th to the 17th century is now a museum on the history of the Order of Malta.
  • The Romanesque church of Notre -Dame was built in the 12th century.

Twinning

The city maintains a decades -lasting partnership with the German town of Breckerfeld in North Rhine-Westphalia.
