Gene Fullmer

Gene Fullmer ( born July 21, 1931 in West Jordan, Utah ) is a retired American boxer.

Professional career

A native of the Boxprovinz Utah Mormon 1951 professional middleweight and beat in the early stages of his career, Paul Pender, Rocky Castellani, Gil Turner and Ralph "Tiger" Jones, which established him despite three point defeats in the meantime as a world class man. Fullmer had a solid power and above-average skills taker, boxed aggressively but without much details.

On January 2, 1957, he won the world title with a points victory over fifteen rounds against the gradually becoming old Sugar Ray Robinson. In the rematch - four months later - he lost the belt, however, already again. Robinson beat him by one of the most famous left hook boxing history with a single hit in the fifth round knockout.

In 1959, he defeated Carmen Basilio for the title after version NBA by TKO in the fourteenth round. He defended it seven times, including against Spider Webb, Basilio, Robinson in a third fight ( points win ), Florentino Fernandez and Benny Paret. In a fourth fight against Robinson, he boxed as a draw against Joey Giardello.

In 1962, he met with the Nigerian Dick Tiger on an opponent, he simply could not defeat; Tiger took him the title over fifteen laps on points. A second fight ended in a draw, a third he lost prematurely. He then ended his career.

In 1968, was seen in a small role in the war film The Devil's Brigade.

Gene Fullmer 's brother Don was also successful world ranking boxers.

1991 was Fullmer induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
