General Theological Seminary

The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church is a Theological College of the Episcopal Church in the United States, which is in the Chelsea neighborhood in Manhattan (New York City) is. It is the oldest seminary of the U.S. Episcopal Church and the oldest still existing seminary of the Anglican Communion.

History

During May, 1817, the General Convention met, the supreme body of the synodal Episcopal Church, in New York City and adopted two resolutions. One was the establishment of a General Episcopal Seminary, which should be supported by the entire church, and the second determined that it should be located in New York City.

The Bishop of New York, John Henry Hobart, served as the first dean of the seminar. Even after Hobart the position of the Dean of the respective bishop of New York was up in the 1850s met. Eugene Augustus Hoffman was appointed in 1878 as dean.

Study
