General Zuazua (municipality)

General Zuazua is a municipality in the north of the Mexican state of Nuevo León and known for its rodeos and local cuisine with dishes such as Empalmes, empanadas or Hojarazcas.

The town was named after the General Juan Zuazua, who is revered as a hero of the war to reform the Constitution of 1857.

The municipality covers 124 km ² to 400 m. Neighboring municipalities are in the north Cienega de Flores, in the East Higueras and Marín, in the south and the east Apodaca Salinas Victoria. In 2005, the municipality had 6985 inhabitants, of whom 93 Nahua.

History

In 1660 founded the captain Enrique Gutiérrez de Lara, the Hacienda de San Pedro, which served as a fortress in the battle against the Comanches since the end of the 18th century. In 1848 the General Mariano Arista hit 500 Comanche, what an inscription at the entrance to the hacienda recalls. On 2 March 1863, the Villa de la Hacienda de St. Elena was near by Santiago Vidaurri, the then Governor of the State of Nuevo León, founded, which was later renamed Villa del General Zuazua.

Attractions

The 1875 built and 1979 restored church of Santa Elena de la Cruz is dedicated to the patron saint of the place. It is located on the main square of the town, where in October, the Feria de la hojarasca is held.

About 5 km outside of town is the Hacienda de San Pedro, which was acquired in 1984 by the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León ( UANL ) and restored from 1986 to 1990. Here, the Centro de Información de Historia Regional is ( information center about the history of the region ) with a museum and a library. On the site of a small observatory was built in 1997.
