Geoff Stephens

Geoff Stephens ( born October 1, 1934 in London ) is an English composer and songwriter, who was one in particular in the 1960s and 1970s to the outstanding Represented England in this area.

Stevens was actually a teacher by profession for French, English, sports and religion, but then took a job at an advertising agency in London. In addition, he wrote a revue and small sketches for the BBC.

As a music publisher was looking for staff, Stephens applied for and got a job as a composer.

In 1964, he co-wrote with Les Reed his first hit - " Tell Me When " for the Apple Jacks (7th UK). Immediately afterwards followed " The Crying Game" for Dave Berry (1964 # 5 UK).

Together with Peter Eden, he discovered and managed Donovan, whose first three singles and first album he also produced.

In 1966 he wrote and composed the song " Winchester Cathedral" and thus landed a number-one hit in the U.S. charts and front quotations for example, in England (No. 4) and Germany ( 15th place). Especially for this purpose, he founded the The New Vaudeville Band. The band played in the style of the 20s, the lead singer drawled as through a megaphone - and the international million-seller was born. Together with John Carter, he wrote the song " Semi-Detached Suburban Mr. James" for Manfred Mann, with Les Reed followed for Herman 's Hermits " There's a kind of hush", which for the Carpenters an even bigger success should be later.

In 2000 he was awarded the Ivor Novello Award for his contributions as a British songwriter.
