Georg Friedrich Parrot

Georg Friedrich Parrot ( born July 5, 1767 in Montbeliard, France, .. † 8 Julijul / July 20 1852greg in Helsinki) was a player in Livonia physicist and university professor.

Life

Georg Friedrich Parrot (French George -Frédéric Parrot ) was Scottish- French origin. His father was a respected surgeon and Mayor. Georg Friedrich Parrot studied from 1782 to 1786 at the University of Stuttgart. In 1795 he was commissioned by Count Karl Sievers a job as a tutor for his sons on the lock turning in Livonia. From 1796 to 1801 was secretary of the Parrot founded in Riga in 1796 Livonian profit and economic partnership. In 1801 he received his doctorate in Königsberg to Dr. phil. his doctoral thesis on the influence of Physic and chemistry to pharmacology.

1801/ 02 Georg Friedrich Parrot was instrumental in the re- establishment of the University of Tartu by the Russian Tsar Alexander I, the Parrot since the visit of the Tsar in Tartu joined a friend in May 1802. The University of Tartu was the only German -speaking Lutheran University and all of Russia. Parrot had role in ensuring that the University of the Livonian knights remained independent. He advocated particularly for the self- administration of the university and the freedom of teaching. Parrot beat the Russian Tsar Alexander I before the abolition of serfdom.

From 1802 to 1826 held the post of professor Parrot for Theoretical and Experimental Physics at the University of Tartu. He was the first rector of the university re-established. Parrot had held the position in 1802 / 03, 1805/ 06 and 1812/13.

1808 Parrot became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and in 1826 a full member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences, where he worked as the director of the physical laboratory from 1826 to 1840. He was known for his work on the electrical and optical physics. In addition Parrot conducted research on the physical properties of liquids and meteorological topics. Georg Friedrich Parrot died in 1852 during a trip to Helsinki.

Georg Friedrich Parrot is the father of the German Baltic Arzt and physicist Johann Parrot ( 1792-1841 ).
