Georg Hellat

Georg Hellat (born 19 Februarjul / March 3 1870greg in Puka, Livonia, .. † August 28, 1943 in Tallinn, Estonia) was an Estonian architect.

Life and Architecture

Georg Hellat was born in Puka ( German Bockenhof ). In 1900 he graduated from the Institute of Civil Engineering in the Russian capital Saint Petersburg. He subsequently served as one of the first professional Estonian architect.

From 1912 to 1915 Hellat city architect of Estonian capital Tallinn was ( Reval ). From 1919 to 1923 he worked as the head of the construction department of the Tallinn city government.

Architectural work

Hellats main work is the corporation house of the association of students Estonian ( Eesti Üliõpilaste Selts ) in Tartu ( Dorpat ). It was completed in 1902. The building is one of the first and most characteristic monuments of national romanticism in Estonia. In the house the signing of the peace treaty between Finland and the Soviet Union took place on 14 October 1920.

Together with the architects Viktor Schröter built Hellat the Petrus Church in Tartu, the second tallest religious building of Southern Estonia.

Between 1911 and 1913 the cultural and club house Säde arose about his plans in Valga (walk ) in the late Art Nouveau, which also included a theater and a hotel. The Construction burned down several times.

Hellat also drew the original plans of Art Nouveau theater end position in westestnischen Pärnu ( Pärnu ) is responsible, which opened in 1911. On February 23, 1918, the Estonian independence was proclaimed from the balcony of the theater. The theater building was destroyed in 1944.

1914 built Hellat the neoclassical girls' school of Tartu.

Private life

From 1907 to 1925 Hellat with Ludmilla Hellat - Lemba ( 1879-1945 ) was married. The couple had a daughter and a son. 1935 estnisierte Georg Hellat his first name to Jüri.
