Georg Ludwig Kriegk

Georg Ludwig Krieg ( born February 25, 1805 in Darmstadt, † May 28, 1878 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German historian and archivist.

Life

Krieg studied history and philology at Heidelberg and Giessen. In 1825, he came as a tutor to the patrician family Bernus to Frankfurt am Main. In 1834 he received his doctorate in Marburg; he settled as a private scholar in Frankfurt.

He was a member of numerous scientific societies, including the Geographical Society, he was one of its founders in 1836 of the Physical Society, the Senckenberg Nature Research Society and the Frankfurt Association for History and Archaeology. His special interests were the geography, ethnology and archeology. On his initiative, the systematic excavations of the ancient Roman town of Nida began in the district of present-day Heddernheim.

In 1848 he became professor of history at the Municipal School and chairman of the School Reform Club. 1848 to 1849 he was a member of the Constituent Assembly of the Free City of Frankfurt.

Since 1860, he was active in the Frankfurt City Archives, 1863, he left school, and became a city archivist. Under his leadership, the records were first sorted, inventoried and accessible through the writings published by him to the Frankfurt history for scientific research as sources. In addition, he has authored numerous writings on the history of the medieval city republics and Goethe research. In 1875 he went for health reasons to retire. He was at times a member of the Masonic Lodge Frankfurt to unity.

Krieg died on 28 May 1878 in Frankfurt am Main. His grave is located in the main cemetery. After Krieg was a street in the district of Frankfurt Gallus and here the cultural institution " kriegkstr12 " named.

His literary estate was initially managed in the public library and came in 1888 to the city archive. There, most of the collection was lost in the bombing of Frankfurt am Main in World War II.
