Georg Wenzelburger

Georg Wenzel Burger ( born December 22, 1910 in Uhingen; † January 18, 2000 in Grafenberg ) was a German officer ( last major of the reserve) in the Second World War.

Life

Wenzelburger was born on 22 December 1910 in Uhingen in Göppingen, the son of a locksmith and trained in his youth to the glass grinder. He arrived in 1930 as a volunteer in the Reichswehr. After nine years of service in the infantry regiment 13 in Ulm went up to sergeant, he married just before the war began. In 1940 he was employed as a platoon leader in the 12th company with the 5th Infantry Division in the Western campaign.

Because of his achievements, he was promoted to Sergeant and transferred to the Eastern Front to Russia, where he was promoted to lieutenant in the reserves after the winter battle 1941/42. To the head of the 9th (MG) ​​appointed company, Wenzelburger led his unit in the fighting to Chelm and the encirclement battle of Demyansk.

In the spring of 1942 he was promoted to first lieutenant of the reserve and in August 1943, he was temporarily in the battle group as leader in hunter - Regiment 38 with the 8th Infantry Division on Ilmensee use. In August 1944, in the meantime promoted to captain of the reserve, he moved to the top of the Second Battalion of the 547th Grenadier Regiment in 1093 the People's Grenadier Division and fought with her in East Prussia. He was severely wounded. On December 26, 1944 He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his services. It was promoted to major in the reserve and to the battalion commander. Wenzelburger received the Close Combat Clasp in Gold for 78 days close combat, which is the second highest number of combat days. In April, he flew into a military hospital in American captivity, from which he was dismissed in July 1945.

He died on 18 January 2000 at the age of 89 years in Grafenberg / Württemberg.
