George Buchanan (diplomat)

Sir George William Buchanan GCB GCMG GCVO PC ( born November 25, 1854 in Copenhagen, Denmark, † December 20, 1924 ) was a British diplomat. Buchanan was among other things, 1910-1917 British Ambassador in St. Petersburg.

Life and work

Buchanan was born in 1854 as son of British diplomat Sir Andrew Buchanan in the diplomatic representative of the United Kingdom, Denmark.

After various diplomatic posts until 1910, so in 1908 the British representative in The Hague perceived, Buchanan was sent in 1910 as British Ambassador to Russia to Saint Petersburg.

Despite his friendly relations did not succeed Buchanan, Tsar Nicholas II to move to a reform of the autocratic system. According to Buchanan this circumstance was due mainly to the influence of the tradition of hearing and " narrow-minded " anti-reform Tsarina and their courtiers.

After returning from Russia as a result of the revolutionary turmoil of the years 1917/1918 to London, Buchanan closed his career as a British representative to the Holy See in Rome ( 1919-1921 ).
