George C. Butte

George Charles Butte ( born May 8, 1877 in San Francisco; † 18 January 1940 in Mexico City ) was an American politician, jurist and Governor-General of the Philippines.

Studying and working as a university teacher

After studying law at Austin College and the University of Texas, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts, Butte worked as a lawyer in Texas and Oklahoma from 1903 to 1911. Later, he studied law in Germany at the universities of Berlin and Heidelberg and France at the " École de Droit " in Paris. 1914 Butte professor at the University of Texas Law School.

In 1918 he gave up his professorship and was for a short time on 5 October 1918 to the March 10, 1919 Major of the United States Army and head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Army Staff.

After that, he was a staff member of the reigning from 1917 to 1921, Governor of Texas William Pettus Hobby. This appointed him in 1920 in the Commission to draw up a bill for the electricity companies in Texas.

Subsequently, he was a professor and dean from 1923 to 1924 the University of Texas Law School. In 1924, he ran unsuccessfully as a candidate of the Republican Party for the office of governor of Texas and subject to the candidate of the Democratic Party Miriam A. Ferguson. Although he was defeated, but he reached ten times the usual result of the Republicans at this time. This reason was that he was supported by renegade members of the Democratic Party, but also the Ku Klux Klan.

Puerto Rico and the Philippines

1925 Butte Attorney General of Puerto Rico, and remained in that office even when he was three times acting governor. This office he held until his appointment as Special Assistant to the Minister of Justice, 1928.

On December 31, 1930, he was Deputy Governor of the Philippines. From 9 January to 29 February 1932, he was acting Governor-General of the Philippines. Following the resignation of this office he was from July 1, 1932 to February 1, 1936 for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines.

Butte, the internationally recognized expert on colonial administration and international law was, among other things, was also an honorary life member of the Bar of Texas as well as Honorary President of the Bar Association of Puerto Rico.
