George Frederick Barker

George Frederick Barker (* July 14, 1835 in Charlestown (Massachusetts ), † May 24, 1910 in Philadelphia ) was an American chemist.

He studied at the Sheffield Scientific School and graduated there. He then studied at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. , Received his doctorate in 1858 Ph.B. and was an assistant to Benjamin Silliman. In 1859, he went to Harvard Medical School in Boston and in 1861 as a teacher of natural sciences to the Wheaton College. In 1862 he became professor of chemistry in 1862 at the Medical College in Albany, NY and Professor of Natural Sciences at Western University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1866 he was demonstrator and the following year Professor of Physiological Chemistry and Toxicology at Yale University in New Haven. From 1873 he was professor of physics at the University of Philadelphia. In 1881 he was an emissary of the United States at the Electrical Exhibition in Paris. In 1900 he retired.

In addition to numerous honorary doctorates, he was in 1898 Sc.Dhc at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the Legion of Honor of France. From 1868 to 1900 he was co-editor of the American Journal of Science and editor of the Journal of the Franklin Institution.
