George Frederick, Prince of Nassau-Siegen

Georg Friedrich Ludwig of Nassau - Siegen, called "Fritz", ( born February 23, 1606 Dillenburg, † April 5, 1674 in Bergen op Zoom ) was the count of Nassau- Siegen ( 1664: Prince of Nassau- Siegen ) Count to Katzenelenbogen, Vianden and Diez, Baron of Beilstein.

Life

Georg Friedrich was the son of Johann VII of Nassau-Siegen (1561-1623) and his second wife Princess Margaretha of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg ( 1583-1658 ). His brother was John Maurice of Nassau- Siegen ( " Brazilian " ) ( 1604-1679 ), his sister Amalia Magdalena von Nassau- Siegen ( 1613-1669 ).

Georg Friedrich was a soldier and was born on November 19, 1627 Captain of the Infantry of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. On January 3, 1633, he was captain in the cavalry. On January 9, 1637, he returned as Major back to the infantry, where he was on 8 January 1642, Colonel. Georg Friedrich was from 30 October 1648 to 1658 governor of Rheinberg. On October 25, 1658 he was Governor of Bergen op Zoom. In 1661 he became a Knight of the highest order of Denmark, the " Riddere af Elephant categorized ". From 1638 to his death after being wounded on the battlefield in 1674, he was ruler of Nassau-Siegen and successor of John VIII of Nassau- Siegen.

He married on June 4, 1647 in 's- Gravenhage, (now The Hague), Mauritia Princess Eleonora of Portugal ( 1609-1674 ). From this marriage the children were born:

  • Margaretha Sofia Princess of Nassau- Siegen ( † 1737)
