George (Gryaznov)

Georgi (Russian Георгий, secular name Alexander Ivanovich Grjasnow Александр Иванович Грязнов; born January 26, 1934 in Bedrin at Kovrov, Vladimir Oblast, † April 1, 2011 in Kaluga, Kaluga Oblast ) was a Russian Orthodox priest, theologian and Archbishop in Chelyabinsk and Zlatoust.

Life

After school, he worked in agriculture and served in the Soviet Army before joining the seminary. In 1962 he finished his studies at the Moscow Theological Academy. On November 26, 1968, he received the diaconate, and on 28 August 1969, the ordination. In 1970 he was awarded his doctorate for a candidate of theology. On April 2, 1972 he was ordained monk named Georgi. In 1973 he was elevated to the rank of abbot. Since 1976 he has taught as an adjunct professor at the Institute of homiletics at the Moscow Theological Academy. In 1978 he was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite. He was appointed first vice-rector of the Moscow Theological Academy in 1989.

By choosing the Holy Synod and the Patriarch Pimen Decree I, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and head of the Russian Orthodox Church, he was appointed on April 10, 1989 Bishop of Chelyabinsk and Zlatoust. The episcopal ordination was donated to him on 22 April 1989. In December 1996 he was appointed Patriarch Alexius II as Bishop of Lyudinovsky, auxiliary bishop of Kaluga and Borovsk. On 25 February 2005 he was elevated to the rank of archbishop.

He has been honored several times, including with the Russian Order of St. George and the St. Sergius of Radonezh - Order.
