George Henry Chase

George Henry Chase ( born June 13, 1874 in Lynn, Massachusetts, † February 2nd 1952 in Cambridge, Massachusetts) was an American classical archaeologist.

Life

George Henry Chase studied at Harvard University, where he Bachelor 1896 and 1897 the master gained. From 1896 to 1898 he held on to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens and directed the excavations at the Heraion of Argos. His doctorate, he reached in 1900 at Harvard with a dissertation on Greek sign painting.

After studying Chase initially worked briefly as a master at St. Mark's School in Southborough (Massachusetts ) before he was hired in 1901 as a lecturer at Harvard University. In 1906 he was appointed Assistant Professor. In 1908 he married and cataloged the collection of vases by James Loeb, on his behalf. After he had taken part in the excavations at Sardis in 1914, he was appointed in 1916 to John E. Hudson Professor of Archaeology. From 1925 to 1939 he served as Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, from 1939 until his retirement on 1 July 1945 as Dean of the University. In this position, he represented the University President James Bryant Conant during its use in World War II.

In his research, dedicated to Chase the ancient vase painting and sculpture. He published catalogs of Arretine vases (Collection James Loeb, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) and worked for the Corpus vasorum Antiquorum USA the eighth fascicle ( Fogg Art Museum, Collection Gallatin ).
