George I Rákóczi

George I Rákóczi György Rákóczi Hungarian I. ( born June 8, 1593 in Szerencs, † October 11, 1648 in Sárospatak ) was 1630 Prince of Transylvania from the Hungarian Calvinist noble family of Rákóczi.

Life

Rákóczi was appointed as the husband of Sophia Báthory, heiress of the Báthory of Somlyó, Prince of Transylvania after the death of Gabriel Bethlen in 1630 and used the former afflictions Austria to oft-repeated, but to make haphazard incursions into Hungary. After he had in 1643 with Sweden and shortly afterwards with France formed an alliance against Austria, he occupied almost the whole of Hungary and was already near Pressburg, when he was persuaded by the Sublime Porte to a truce. This was followed by the Peace of Linz ( December 1645 ), the Hungarians free exercise of religion as well as restitution of all the Protestant churches taken granted. Rákóczi received for his person seven Hungarian counties for life, and more great possessions. He also received the Imperial Prince, for himself and his descendants. His successor as Prince of Transylvania was the son of him and Sophia, George II Rákóczi, who had been elected in 1642 to the Prince.
