George Irving (American actor)

George S. Irving ( born October 5, 1874 in New York as George Henry Irving; † September 11, 1961 in Hollywood, California ) was an American actor and director.

Life and career

1899 was George Irving made ​​his Broadway debut in the play The Only Way. By 1907, he appeared in supporting roles in at least eleven pieces. In 1914 he came to Hollywood, where he first worked mainly as a director and occasionally starred in movies. After 35 more smaller films, he finished in 1924 his work as a director and henceforth worked exclusively as an actor.

Since the 1.83 m tall, gray-haired Irving always had a well-groomed appearance, he played mostly strict authority figures. During his career he played, among other politicians, generals, lawyers or doctors. After end of the silent movie era many of his roles were no longer mentioned in the credits, so many of his 260 film appearances were extremely small. At Irving's better-known films include Coquette, the woman for all and Bringing Up Baby. In 1954, he finished his career with an appearance in the television series Omnibus.

George Irving was married to Katherine Gilman, his wife he met in the 1900s while working on the piece Just Out of College know in which she played the lead role. With Gilman he had two daughters named Katherine and Dorothy, Katherine was also an actress. George Irving died aged 86 of a heart attack. Irving was buried in an unmarked tomb at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California.
