George Irving Bell

George Irving Bell ( * August 4, 1926 in Evanston (Illinois ), † 28 May 2000) was an American mountaineer and scientist.

Life

George Irving Bell studied at Harvard University physics, later he focused on the biology and researched successfully in the field of immunology.

As a mountaineer, he took part in the 1950s and 1960s in several major American expeditions. His most significant success was in 1960 the first ascent of Masherbrum ( 7821 m) along with Willi Unsoeld.

  • Yerupajá, 6635 m ( Cordillera Huayhuash, Peru ); 1950 a GI Bell organized expedition succeeded the first ascent on the southern flank and west wall, reached the summit David Harrah and James Maxwell.
  • Salcantay, 6271 m ( Cordillera Vilcabamba, Peru ), first ascent in 1952 with Fred D. Ayres, David Michael Jr., WV Graham Matthews, Claude Kogan and M. Bernard Pierre
  • K2, 8611 m ( Karakorum ), ascent attempt in 1953, the American K2 expedition reaches a height of 7800 m (Camp VIII) with type Gilkey, Tony Streather, Charles Houston, Dee Molenaar and Pete Schoening
  • Masherbrum, 7821 m ( Karakorum ), 1960 First ascent via the southeast face with Willi Unsoeld
