George Lawrence Stone

George Lawrence Stone ( * 1886, † November 19, 1967 ) was an American drummer and drum teacher. He was the son of George Burt Stone, also a drummer. First contacts with the music he received by him but also by the work of the instrument his father's factory. When he died, he took over the company and became head of the Stone Drum and Xylophone School in Boston.

George Lawrence studied with Harry A. Bowers and Frank E. Dodge and studied with Oscar Schwar by the Philadelphia Orchestra. He also learned music theory at the New England Conservatory of Music. In 1910 he became xylophone player at the Keith Vaudeville Circuit.

Stone was one of the founding members in 1933 founded the National Association of Rudimental Drummers ( NARD ), in which he had presided 15 years.

He is also the author of the books Stick Control for the Snare Drummer ( 1935) and Accents and Rebounds for the Snare Drummer ( 1961).

Among his students there were influential drummer Joe Morello, Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton and Vic Firth.
