George Leveson-Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland

George Granville Leveson - Gower, 1st Duke of Sutherland KG PC ( January 9, 1758 *, † July 19, 1833 ) was a British nobleman, politician and diplomat.

Life

George Granville Leveson - Gower was the only son of Granville Leveson - Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford ( 1721-1803 ) and his first wife Lady Louisa Egerton ( 1723-1761 ), a daughter of Scroop Egerton, 1st Duke of Bridgewater, with his second wife Lady Rachael Russell.

Between 1779 and 1799 he was a deputy ( Whig ) for the districts of Newcastle-under -Lyme and Staffordshire. Later he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire. For two years, he was British Ambassador to France.

Leveson - Gower was in 1799 during the lifetime of his father, a seat in the House of Lords, by transfer its subsidiary title of Baron Gower previously got ( Writ of acceleration ). In 1803 he inherited at his death the title of Marquess of Stafford. A few months before his death, he was raised to the Duke of Sutherland.

Leveson - Gower was the richest Briton of the 19th century. He on the other hand also known for his role in the early phase of the Highland Clearances, which were operated by him and in particular the large possessions of his wife in Scotland.

Family

On September 4, 1785 George Granville Leveson - Gower married in London Elizabeth Gordon, 19th Countess of Sutherland, ( 1765-1839 ), the daughter and heiress of William Gordon, 18th Earl of Sutherland, and Mary Maxwell. This was a Peeress in her own right. From the joint connecting four children who survived infancy:
