George Lyon (Scottish politician)

George Lyon (* July 16, 1956 in Rothesay, Isle of Bute ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Liberal Democrats.

Lyon attended Rothesay Academy and then worked as an independent farmer. He is a member and past president of the National Farmers Union of Scotland.

Political career

In the Scottish Parliament elections in 1999 Lyon candidate for the constituency of Argyll and Bute and was able to secure the direct mandate before the SNP candidate Duncan Hamilton. In the 2003 parliamentary elections, he was able to defend his position by a clear margin. Starting in 2005, Lyon was Deputy Minister for Finance and Parliamentary Business. After the 2007 parliamentary elections Lyon lost his seat to the SNP politician Jim Mather

At European level, Lyon went to the 2009 European elections and won one of two seats for the Liberal Democrats in Scotland. Since then, he has been a member of the European Parliament.
