George Mallet

Sir George Mallet GCSL GCMG CBE ( born July 24, 1923 in Castries, St. Lucia, † October 20, 2010 ) was a politician and Governor-General of Saint Lucia.

Biography

Mallet was at a by-election ( By-election ) a member of the meeting house elected 1958 ( House of Assembly ) and represented there until 1996, the constituency of Central Castries. In the late 1950s he became increasingly important as a politician and campaigned for a sovereignty of St. Lucia from the UK. Between 1958 and 1961 he was the only opposition member of the ten-member legislature.

In 1964 he formed an alliance with John Compton of two opposition parties, which led to the founding of the United Workers Party, the defining political force of St. Lucia for many years.

In 1964 formed government of Chief Minister Compton Mallet was not only deputy Compton, but also Minister of Tourism, Trade and Industry. This office he held until July 1979, when the UWP suffered a defeat in the first parliamentary elections after the independence on 22 February 1979.

The offices of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Trade and Industry, he had again held from May 1982 to 1992. Subsequently, he was from 1992 to 1996 Minister of Foreign Affairs, Home Affairs and continue to trade and industry minister.

On 1 June 1996 he was appointed as successor to Sir Stanislaus A. James Governor-General of Saint Lucia and appointed by Queen Elizabeth II to Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. He led from then on the additional name "Sir". However, the Office of the Governor General, he held little more than a year until its replacement by Pearlette Louisy on 17 September 1997.
