George Mills (footballer)

George Robert Mills ( born December 29, 1908 in Deptford; † 15 July 1970, Torquay ) was an English football player and coach, who played mainly for Chelsea and this later took over as coach.

Career as a footballer

His first contract with Chelsea FC, ​​he signed as an amateur in 1929. Previously he played for Bromley FC When Chelsea FC he played for the rest of his career. He was a very successful scorer in his time and made 123 goals in 239 games. Nevertheless, he was often overlooked and stood in the shadow of more glamorous but less reliable and more successful, players like Hughie Gallacher and Joe Bambrick.

In his first season Mills scored 14 goals in 20 games for Chelsea and helped them with it in reaching the Football League First Division. His best season was 1936/37, when he scored 22 goals in 32 games, which he brought a nomination for the English national team. For England he scored three goals, all during a 5-1 victory against Northern Ireland on 23 October 1937.

Mills was the first Chelsea player, who scored more than 100 league goals, a feat that only five other accomplished since then. Mills is the sixth most time scoring list Chelsea. After his playing career he became a coach at Chelsea.

Life after his playing days in football

Mills later worked in the City of London for a printing company and died in 1970 during a holiday in Torquay.
